A) Définition
Note : By the Digital Sea (wrongly called the Digital Void ), we mean , there, the part of the Digital Sea Lyoko entered. In the Series, the heroes call it themselves as Digital Sea. This term is mainly used to separate the small sea of the vast expanse of the Global Digital Network . This fluid circulates by the SAS which is the output of Lyoko.
The Digital Sea is sometimes referred to Digital void wrongly because when the heroes are falling, they are digitized forever. The amalgam is therefore probably from the expression "Falling into the void."
The digital void corresponds to the "atmosphere" of Lyoko: Everything on Lyoko is not a solid substance (such as the sectors land ) or aqueous ... Except precisely, we can not speak of atmosphere because the gas does not exist on Lyoko. All that appears to be so we like the air is a "digital space"
Long, until the episode 71 "Maiden Voyage", the heroes only had a fuzzy conception of what is Lyoko. Digital Sea was therefore the known limit of Lyoko that they cannot cross, because it is mostly a trap that can be fatal. Indeed, the digital sea waves like any true sea .. but appearances are deceptive!
The water in the Digital Sea is only a symbolization.
Two main theories that exist as to its exact nature.
- The first is that it is actually a pile of data. The immensity of data that scour the Internet are solicited by Billion of users. This is confirmed by the danger of Digital Sea. In fact, when a hero will fall, the virtual body , made of data ,is crushed and dispersed, or swallowed up in the huge data stream. This is what makes the fall in the Digital Sea a mortally dangerous experience.
- However, in the network, there are data banks that are submerged in the water. Thus, the digital water could represent electricity: The Energy! That which circulates in our computers and connects us to the "human network"
Anyway, this fleet is to not confuse with that can sometimes be found on the sectors of Lyoko and is only decorative. Odd can even dip in episode 44 "Vertigo."
When sectors are deleted, the digital sea stays because it is an extension of the global network and it is not affected by Lyoko’s destiny .
B) Role in the serie.
At the beginning of the serie, the Digital intra-Lyoko Sea was mainly used to delimit the "virtual world" that is Lyoko.
It added spice to the serie by creating a danger.
As explained above, when a hero falls in the Digital Sea, he gets serious danger. It must go through two steps to return back.
The first and probably the most difficult: Finding him in this vast digital water.
Second, use a complex materialization programm that that Jeremie employed to bring Aelita on Earth . This is a terribly complex that almost automatic rematerialization which takes place after Devirtualizing in Lyoko process.
This is Yumi who had to experience this in episode 6 "Cruel Dilemma". Fallen into the Digital Sea to save Aelita, the genius had to sacrifice a single copy of the materialization programm to save the Japanese.
After episode 25 "Code : Earth" Jérémie have full control of the _ materialization programm, it is less dangerous to fall into the digital sea, but it is far from recommended for all. Once again, the chances of being rescued are infinitesimal. We must be careful not to lose your vehicle above the Digital Sea or avoid falling off.
However, the heroes also know how to use this phenomenon and as XANA's monsters are not immune by the the Digital Sea, the heroes can sometimes immerse them on through various tricks (like Aelita makes the floor disappear under a tarantula in episode 60 "Temporary insanity").
XANA tries again to use the the Digital Sea to harmTheLyoko warriors. In episode 55 "Tidal Wave" XANA bugs the digital sea, making up and flooding the four surface sectors (three in fact, since the forest was destroyed) ...
The monsters were all destroyed except Frelions which flew. However, it was found that the sets and the towers were not affected! Datas found on Carthage allowed to go down the level of the ocean. The interest of XANA, Other than seriously threaten his enemies, was to prevent access to the towers, notably the activated one.
When XANA will want to Hopper's life, the the Digital Sea take on a new importance. The heroes learn, indeed, in episode 82 "Distant Memory " that it was the hiding place of Franz Hopper. The scientist is actually so powerful that its virtual envelope remains intact even immersed in the network. In addition, the the Digital Sea offers him a perfect refuge, as explained above.
To kill him, XANA has no longer the choice, he must find a way to dislodge him.
To do this, he will drop Aelita in it. Therefore, Franz Hopper will surround her daughter from its protective envelope and will do everything to emerge and drop her child on the floor of Lyoko where she is safe ... and where XANA's waiting for him.
The heroes must therefore do everything that Aelita does not fall into the the Digital Sea.
(See sections History and XANA for more details).
Note also that the Kolosse is strong enough to walk into the the Digital Sea (Episode 93 "Return") and William seem to have received from XANA the ability to hide there.
C)After the Skidbladnir
The Digital Sea started as an uncertain and dangerous frontier for the heroes.
From the time when heroes have the Skidbladnir, they study this sea and discover that she is actually an arm of the World Network ...
Network Immensely larger than you can find on the page that it is concerned
Network where are new threats.
Network where you can find new virtual worlds, Replikas, which contain, in addition, also, their little piece of the Digital Sea.
The Skidbladnir is a submarine that allows heroes to cross the thin barrier that is the digital sea before passing through the lyoko's SAS and engage into a wider area.
Finally, the the Digital Sea is a frountier which has made barrier to the heroes, past a while, and that separated them from the vast network and Replikas.
