I-Caractéristiques du personnage
Spoiler
Newly arrived in Kadic, Laura is a gifted child. However, it’s hard for her to be the smartest since she happens to be be in the same class as Jeremy Belpois, pupil as brilliant as her, if not more. Even if she got quickly noticed after resolving an exercise instead of Jeremy (Episode 4 “Miss Einstein”), the genius boy remains first of the class, to the great displeasure of the bonde girl.
Laura was registered in Kadic by her father, great man of the society, polytechnician first of his promotion. The man hopes that Kadic will push Laura to the top. He is inflexible and extremely strict, putting a very big pressure on the young girl. We know nothing else from Laura’s family.
By several strokes of fate, Laura got carried in the XANA’s conflict and found a unique place in the group. She’s gonna be herself a third plot with XANA and Tyron. She’s gonna be the disruptive element in the group’s unicity, like Sissi or William before her. And her place as the great ally against XANA and as the troublemaker in the team at the same time, makes of her a very original character.
II-Caractère et comportement
Spoiler
Laura is the newest member of the Lyoko-Warriors. She develops quickly a peculiar relationship with the group. At first, she’s only interrested in Jeremy, ignoring completely the others.
This interrest in the genius boy puts her immediately on bad terms with Aelita (Episode 4 “Miss Einstein”). And this, without any real reason, since Laura seems interrested in him only for professional reasons : Laura is happy to have someone to talk informatics with as equals. So she doesn’t care about the rest of the group.
Laura has difficulties to be accepted. Not only did she force her way into the group but she is kinda hot-headed. Laura is (for a good reason ?) very self-assured, maybe too self-assured. That’s why she behaves, without realizing, in a condescending way, even in a completely arrogant way.
This is shown with the jokes and the exasperated sighs she gives to the others. Actually, Laura underestimates XANA. That is understandable : she only knows the weakend version of the program and she’s not threatened by the spectres. However, Laura is confident in her abilities. Events often prove her right since she manages to solve problems that even Jeremy and Aelita failed to.
Laura feels like she’s got a mission. She’s sure she has a bright future in front of her and that she can beat XANA by herself. That’s what will cause her definitve exclusion from the group after she and William went on a mission to destroy the Cortex alone. (Episode 22 : “Mutiny”)
All these behavior problems get understandable with Laura’s father. A very clever man but arrogant and full of himself, he causes a very great pressure on her daughter so she can be the best. Laura has actually the same behavior as her father’s only when she takes people of top.
With this very strict education, Laura doesn’t look for neither love nor friendship. She doesn’t care about what the Lyoko-Warrior, and particularly Aelita, think about her. What she wants before everything else is gratitude. She wants her great talent to be acknowledged. So, she can’t resist to put herself forward when she succesfully does something (Episode 12 : “Chaos in Kadic”). She’s getting upset when nobody acknowledges she is the reason the mission was a success(Episode 11 : “Rendezvous”). She’s finally surprised when Aelita comes personnally thanking her.
Despite that, Laura is still not accepted. She only considers the Lyoko-Warriors as virtual tools. And Jeremy only gives her half the gratitude she deserves, too afraid of Aelita.
However, Laura is determined. She is volunteer and as hard-working as Jeremy who she spends countless hours with to develop the virus. She is also very curious, which pushes her to inquire on Aelita’s past or even follow the Warriors to the factory the first time she meets them.
Laura has a last set of default : she can be very derisive, even sneaky. However, the debate to know who’s right and who’s wrong is still in process. Is Laura only defendind herself against Aelita’s new wickedness? Or does she has pleasure to annoy Jeremy’s doll to whom she seems to see some kind of concurrence... Big fan debate !
Last point : Laura is the manipulative and calculating kind when needed. She uses the weak points of William and his feelings towards Yumi to have him help her in the episode 22. When Aelita is depressed and arrives in Jeremy’s room to have some comfort, Laura is satisfied to see Aelita making her way back and doesn’t even warn Jeremy about her (Episode 18 : “Tenacity”)
Laura’s personnality is indeed very contrasted... and that’s what interresting in her character.
III-Autour du monde virtuel
Spoiler
After Laura proved her skills by helping Jeremy to debug the Megapod in hurry (Episode 4 : “Miss Einstein”), she’s taken in the group to help the operator when Aelita is on Lyoko. She’s not willing to go on the virtual world even if it nearly happen in the episode 13 “Friday the 13th” to debug the Skid.
Her role is the same as Jeremy’s. She’s often there to help when the genius is in charge. It happened, however, that she was the one in charge (Episode 11 “Rensezvous” and 22 “Mutiny”)
As Laura joined the group later than the others, her skilled are somehow paradoxal. She’s excellent in the creation of a virus (Episode 8 : “Virus”) that even Jeremy wasn’t able to make, and in the comprehension of artificial intelligence (Episode 11 : “Rendezvous”). However, she seems to lack some basic skills that Jeremy does easily like the virtualisation of the Megapod. (Episode 22 : “Mutiny”)
Laura is often left aside since the Warriors don’t trust her. However, she’s often here to help when the situation degenarate. She helped Jeremy in many tasks like the creation of the identification program od the doppelgängers (Episode 21 : False Pretences). And without her, the virus that Jeremy implants into Tyron’s supercomputer wouldn’t even exist.
In general, Laura didn’t really know the real danger of the lutte against XANA and that’s how she was mainly different from the other Warriors.
IV-Histoire
Spoiler
Laura arrives in Kadic in the middle of the year. Determined to get noticed, she hasn’t the slightest idea how much she will succeed. A boy of her class holds her attention : Jeremy Belpois. Very skilled in informatics, his group seems to hide a secret. She tries to make contact but fails. It’s after following them that she discovers what’s been going on : the teenage group fights against an artificial intelligence from a high-tech lab hidden in the basement of a factory. In this lab, there’s a Supercomputer generating a virtual world. Laura just discovered the secret of Lyoko. Just arrived from nowhere in the middle of a mission, Jeremy is unable to take her away. But it apperas that Laura finds herslef extremely useful and assists Jeremy who tries to save Yumi from falling into the digital sea. Aelita wants to tke her place after being devirtualized but Jeremy stops her. Start of the conflict between the girls.
Yumi is eventually saved and the Warriors asks is Laura should be integrated or not. It’s the first time in the lab for the blonde girl and she has shown how mush she can give them. But before anyone can say something, Aelita launches a Return to the Past. (Episode 4 : “Miss Einstein”)
Back to the start for the young girl... or almost.
Jeremy really noticed her skills and when he fails to make a virus destined to destroy Tyron’s Supercomputer, he decides to call her to help and delete her memory afterwards with a Return to the Past. It would only be a limited use of her brain for the greater good. They lead them to the lab after Odd steals her tablet.
Then she accepts the mission Jeremy gives her and help him develop the virus. But she quickly see through the trap. She then modifies the Time program so it can’t affect her. The warriors are soon very surprised when she arrives in the lab after the Return to the past with all her memories. She then helps the Lyoko-Warriors once again. Then, even though how mush she’s been useful, they decide they will call her only as utimate resort and leave her aside the other times (Episode 8 "Virus)
However, that’s very ingrateful from them because Laura will soon reval being a very precious trump card. Being a codeless, she’s obviously not the target of XANA’s spectres. However, she’s given a main role in the virus creation. The first version didn’t work as Tyron has modified his Supercomputer. Both her and Jeremy work as hard as they can on a better version.
That complicity between them displeases Aelita who doesn’t miss on occasion to say something against her. On her side, Laura doesn’t do anything to stop that situation, even adding more wood to the fire by looking into Aelita’s past about Franz Hopper (Episode 16 : “Confusion”)
Anyways, Laura has often the occasion to shine. During a mission in which Jeremy and Aelita are unavailable, the blonde girl handles the things by herself, solving the harsh problem of the protection program from the towers activated by XANA. She’s also called in emergency when XANA sends a virus to the Skid. She was even nearly virtualized to repair the ship but Aelita made sure to prevent that.
She’s also the first one to discover that the Cortex has also towers, like Lyoko, and that XANA can attack from there.
Always rebuffed by the warriors, Laura ends up felling resentment towards them. The situation doesn’t get better when Laura’s father arrives to Kadic to take her to another school. Seeing her access to the Supercomputer fading away and knowing that her “friends” wouldn’t do anything to help her, she brings her father to the lab to force Jeremy to use a Return to the past. This act makes however things worse for Laura into the group (Episode 12 : “Chaos at Kadic”).
That’s when a new opportunity is given to her. Tyron sends one of his men, Graven, to Kadic to try to find the Lyoko-Warriors. Asked to do a skills test on the quantum physics, Laura tries to falsify the answers but eventually gets caught. Graven asks her to collaborate and integrate Tyron’s center for gifted children, leaving a card for her.
The warriors eventually manage to keep Graven away with a return to the past... But Laura keeps secretly the card and all the opportunities for her future. (Episode 17 : “A Professionnal Carreer Guaranteed”)
The virus she’s creating with Jeremy fnally arrives to a conclusion. Laura is with the warriors when they discover that Aelita’s mother is still alive. She silently accepts the choice not to use the virus so the young pink-head girl can find her parent. (Episode 18 “Tenacity”)
However, the more Jeremy improves the virus with her, the teenage girl grows impatient, shocked to see that the Lyoko-Warriors are taking the risk to lat XANA alive for personal reasons. She decides soon to handle the things her way. She goes to see William and manipulate him so he can go to the Cortex and use the virus to destroy it. Very angry against Yumi at this moment, the ex XANA-Warrior accepts. The mission turns out to be a failure : while Laura in unable to virtualize the Megapod, William ends up in the Scyphozoa’s tentacles. The Lyoko-Warriors arrive and save the day.
Jeremy reveals then that he secretly worked on the Return to the Past. It can now affect Laura again. After a vote, the group decides to expell Laura; The Return to the Past is activated and the blonde girl forgets everything. (Episode 22 “Mutiny”)
From there, Lyoko-adventure is over for Laura.
However, without anybody knowing, Laura hasn’t finished yet causing trouble to the group. Laura soon finds into her bag, the card Graven gave to her. Curious, she decides to call the center. She ends up speaking with Tyron himslef. After several questions, she eventually reveals that the virtual avatars she is shown look like “Jeremy Belpois’ group”. Now that he knows what he wanted to know, he hangs up, leaving Laura there. She is now deprived of her opportunity for her Future in Quantum Physics... But she accidentally let know to Tyron where his opponents were, which would soon lead to his visit in Kadic. (Episode 24 “Temporal Paradox”)
The series ends a bit discretely for Laura who apparently will live from now a normal existence...
