XANA’s nature is not really approached in Code Lyoko Evolution. Outside of the quote above, from a teaser, scriptwriters of Evolution were not income really on the XANA’s identity because these one was treated largely in the cartoon.

Consequently, if you came directly on this page without passing through the begin of the topic, we invite you keenly to simply read the first page of the topic who describe very well who is XANA, with a few allusion to Code Lyoko Evolution.

For connoisseur of the cartoon, we can see that there is no obvious difference between the XANA’s nature in the fourth season and the one of XANA 2.0 in Evolution. Apparently its objectives are the same. It has just need a new attack strategy to succeed that.

#01 XANA 2.0

At the end of the cartoon, XANA was in a power paroxysm. It was expanded across the global Network. With help of Franz Hopper, the heroes was created a program who tract XANA in the Network and destroyed all tracks of him and the Replikas (Virtual Worlds) which it had created. Like that, heroes thought they had destroyed XANA forever.

Months later, heroes realized that XANA is in life. Indeed, the program found refuge where the multi-agent system of heroes didn’t dislodge him: the Supercomputer who generates the Cortex. It must be the only Supercomputer that XANA didn’t could own totally. Based on the same model as the Supercomputer of Franz Hopper, their protections systems must be higher of the average.
This Virtual World wasn’t marked by XANA dislike the Replikas. It’s maybe why he hasn’t destroyed the multi-agent system here.
Result is that XANA is grandly weakened. And sad irony: it’s back to the start. Indeed, in the first season, it was closed in the Supercomputer of heroes. Now, it’s in the one of Tyron. It can’t stretch out in the global network. Take note also that Tyron ignores the program’s presence on his Supercomputer.

XANA is weakened, or bruised. This translates to several points. Firstly, its first appearances were fearful. Symptoms of its back to Kadic (Electrics defaults, cables explosions) reminder greatly the weakness of Prologue’s attacks. We can notice too its specters, more and more formidable as in the cartoon, are a little bit softening in Evolution (Moving slow, etc.).

However, take refuge in Cortex wasn’t only mean trick that has helping XANA to survive.
Smack of its end be almost at, XANA has given to each heroes (Aelita, Odd, Ulrich & Yumi) some sources codes. These codes are part of him and fragment of its lost power. In collecting theirs, it collects possibility to escape of Cortex and stretch again in Network. The artificial intelligence develops a stratagem to collects her sources codes using its specters (See below). XANA recovers gradually its power. To see the different stages in detail, consult the topic “Story at page Code Lyoko Evolution” or “Episode guide”.

We have to admit that fabulous rise in power which should benefit to XANA to recover codes was uneven. On Earth, specters look to take a little bit a second wind (development of specials power, moving faster, talking capacity) but that varied according to episodes. Its attacks on Earth were very weak in contrary to past.

In Virtual World, in contrast, it’s the reverse. XANA exceed to stratagem, scheming and devastating phenomena to put a spoke in the wheel of heroes… It same look reach a power level that was never reveal in adventures previous.

Against all odds, XANA increase gradually of 75 to 95% of its power (Episode 25 “Massacre”). Unfortunately, its momentum was stopped brutally. Indeed, heroes were worked with hardness on a virus who was destroyed the Cortex, its Supercomputer… and XANA too. Teenagers reach to implant the virus in the Cortex… but Tyron switched off his machine, he doesn’t want to lose all his works (Episode 26 “Ultimate Mission”).
So, XANA is in stand-by at the end of events. At its power’s height but yet confined in Tyron’s Supercomputer… who was switch off, diving XANA in a sleep and inactivity forced… until someone restarts the machine and against the virus.

As all program, XANA acts on a computer, but not a classic computer since these are Supercomputers of Franz Hopper and of Tyron… That must be these more powerful at world! These two Supercomputers generated a virtual world (Respectively, Lyoko and Cortex). In these virtual worlds, we find Towers. These are data bank that probe the Net… and especially that connect Virtual Worlds at the global network earthly. So it’s by activating these towers that users (whatsoever a human like Jeremy or a program like XANA) can act in the real world.
A XANA’s attack is result of the tower’s activation, on a virtual world whose XANA will use power for deploying of events electrics and informatics too.

#05 Rivalry

XANA had, before, a vast range of attacks on Earth. But that, it was before. Since its defeat against the multi-agent program, XANA has just one objective principal. End of heroes’ extermination, Franz Hopper’s track down or Humanity’s enslavement. Its unique goal was to collect its source-codes.

But to do this, XANA has one possibility: use its specters. They alone who can track down the heroes, absorb their codes and theirs give to the true owner. Attack type of XANA, into Evolution, is the use of specters.

The originality comes only in the power of every specter (Look at their page to more details) and precisely in the method uses XANA to see if the specter succeeded its mission. If some specters have unfortunately that use a stupid stratagem of “search and destroy” (Or rather “search and catch”), other specters, however, have cleverly deceive the heroes. Analyze XANA’s strategic:

Program has firstly the surprise effect. The heroes don’t can know who the specter is, or when he goes to attack, that’s a big drawback. However the Superscan, who alerts when a tower was activating, lined with identification’s program, which enabling Jeremy and Laura to identify the appearance of specter, compensate.
Note, however, that XANA plays a lot on the surprise effect: Many specters had taken the appearance of people who was close to heroes: Or that of one to heroes, or that of some people in the Kadic college (Except episode 15 and 19).

Afterwards, XANA takes preferably isolated target: A Lyoko-Warrior alone and in a desert place. It’s why Odd lost all his codes the first time (Episode 15 “The Codeless”). It’s also how Yumi deceive the specter (Episode 19 “The Trap”).

Finally, XANA used also the manipulation with a specter that looks like the Aelita’s mother in the episode 11 “Rendezvous”. The creature manipulated the girl with the attitude and words look like to those a real mother.

We go see other attacks launched by XANA.
Firstly, note that sometimes uses technical banal to strengthen its main attack.
Always in the episode 11, it sends to Aelita a message allegedly signed by her mother to give her a meet where the specter waits.

XANA used tree other attacks’ type.
First, in the episode 05 “Rivalry”, it hacks the earthly telephonic network. It puts thus all mobile of the heroes switch off and stops communication between them. However, the attack’s finality is unknown since any other unusual things were notes next to it.

Another attack whose the objective is mysterious or completely elusive: episode 12 “Chaos at Kadic”, wherein XANA hacks the intern network of Kadic, modifying bulletins and creating other genes. But why… mystery…

In episode 13 “Friday the 13th”, heroes are again manipulated by XANA. This attack aims the lottery that XANA is completely buggy, multiplying winners across Europe. Heroes deactivate the tower and discover too late that attack of lottery was just a diversion to keep busy the attention of heroes while XANA attacks the Skidbladnir to big blow of virus. Read more? In view of the little attacks that XANA displays in Code Lyoko Evolution, targets became necessarily clear.

Principal’s targets are the codeful, which are Odd, Ulrich, Yumi and Aelita. They are continuously in viewfinder of specters.

Finally, the most surprising wasn’t the targets that XANA was chose, but the other. Indeed, the program always used roundabout ways to achieve its goals. However, during all episode of codes track, never he attacks Laura or Jeremy, as it does in past, to get rid of this two rivals dangerous. Same thing with William who is, in the virtual world, a big enemy for XANA.

It was never tried to destroy the Supercomputer of heroes. Without their machine, the heroes were been powerless against an attack launched from a Cortex’s tower.

Last potential target: Tyron!
Indeed, XANA could try to eliminate Tyron and his team, in order to takes full control on the Supercomputer of Cortex. That has reproduced the schema that program used in the past when it created its Replikas.
This strategy would was more successful than Tyron was, not voluntary, put a spoke in the wheel of XANA in episode 16 “Confusion” with a Cortex’s updated. Moreover, Tyron haven’t any means to disabled a XANA’s tower.

In conclusion, we can say that, if it has increased of cleverness in the past, the XANA weakened of Cortex was less innovative and particularly blinkered on its one objective of source-codes’ collect, where there may have been other track to explore.

#12 Chaos at Kadic

Let us now on the XANA’s influence in virtual world. It must be note in first time that XANA seems less limited in Cortex who was before in Lyoko. Indeed, though confined in the Tyron’s Supercomputer, XANA can still activate Lyoko’s towers and send there its monsters or act in the Network.
Then what she ploy, our artificial intelligence?

#25 Massacre

We don’t change the good older recipe of Code Lyoko: To attack, XANA used towers. And to counter the attack, heroes should introduce and enter the code Lyoko. The XANA’s objective is to defender towers helped with its different monsters.

XANA protects also two other zones: the Cortex and its access canal: The global Network. Indeed, the program knows goals of heroes, win against him. So, its tried to block the road of heroes in the Network with its aquatics monsters… or does avoid them of Cortex with other monsters. To do that, it can takes target directly heroes or their vehicles: the Skidbladnir in the Network and the Megapod in the Cortex.

That can pass XANA’s monsters at superior level with more specials capacity. To the wall of Blok, almost indestructible and devastating (Episode 7 “Countdown”) by way of the invisible Tarentula (Episode 05 “Rivalry”) or more Kankrelats who were duplicate when are destroyed (Episode 23 “Jeremy’s Blues”). Monsters that were simple obstacles to the heroes can become fast to an insurmountable barrier.

XANA shows its capacity of use many virtual fighters humanoid that the past. These heroes’ clones are redoubtable because they have heroes’ powers and fight much better than other monsters. We can see at occasion a William’s replica (episode 15 “The codeless”) and many of doppelganger (Episode 21 “False Pretences”).
Before, XANA need towers or scanner to virtualize a humanoid avatar. Now, it seems to be doesn’t true.

Note finally that with power of XANA, monsters seem become more than more dangerous. The best example was the one of Mantas (Episode 18 “Tenacity”) who has possibility to exit virtual worlds to immerse in Network to attack the Skid.
Less obvious but no trivial: The monsters’ strength of strike. These look much better defense in hand-to-hand that in the past, especially Krabs that strike Ulrich and William with their legs to multiple times (Episode 19 “The Trap” & Episode 22 “Mutiny”).
Same thing about lasers, heroes are one-shot more frequently.

#11 Rendezvous

There XANA was progress; it was using various virtual phenomena. Of course, the program has used different specials effects in the past (sand tornado, mirage tower, etc…).
However, these events of XANA’s power in the virtual world were extremely timely and rare. Since its back, the artificial intelligence used many virtual mean tricks to counter heroes.

Sometimes acts tower’s defense. In episode 11 “Rendezvous”, the program developed a system clever in which two towers are activated in alternation to create the same specter. The towers’ enter and deactivation must be concomitant, heroes were block for a long time on this headache.

It can also attack acts. XANA targeted the Skidbladnir for two times. First time was in episode 13 “Friday the 13th” wherein it include a virus at under-water… countered at time by the heroes. In episode 23 “Jeremy’s Blues”, it shows must violent and treacherous. It attracts heroes in the Network next to a hub with help of false Franz Hopper’s electronic sign. Here, the Skidbladnir fall into a trap. It immobilized and destroyed by a hub’s protect system that controlled by XANA. Used the Skidbladnir as relay, the artificial intelligence offers to her the Holomap and Superscan’s switch off.

Finally, note that XANA attacks more distinctly at the heroes. In episode 19 “The Trap”, XANA used a virtualized specter residue to stop heroes and put them in the Digital Sea.
William seems to be one of its favorite targets… We don’t break links easily. Twice, it tries to recover him. In episode 22 “Mutiny” with help of the Scyphozoa and in episode 15 “The Codeless” in which uses a William’s clone to manipulate him and tried to attracts him in XANA’s camp.

To conclude, XANA can use reacts emergency, like in episode 16 “Confusion”. During this atypical mission, the heroes discover that Tyron block the possibility for XANA to launched attacks, involuntary, with a system update of the Cortex. XANA haven’t other choice that takes assault of Hearth’s room of the Cortex against the Ninjas. It fails because of heroes but its capacity to activate towers be restored.

In the end, these new XANA’s version was difficult to understand. It seems be weakened on its capacity to acts on Earth (attack less various, inferior strategy) but strengthen in Lyoko (Monsters more power, special attacks more power too). Of course, moreover the storyline, budget constraints linked to the adaptation of Code Lyoko to a live series explained by itself these different between real and virtual world.
Season end with a XANA only stopped temporarily.
