I-The sewers
Spoiler
This place which shouldn't have an enormous importance has been hurled in the foreground, for the simple reason that it is the most direct and the most secret way to go to the Factory.
Kadic Academy has two secret ways which leads there. The fastest is the one in the park (A manhole with a ladder to go down). The second one is located in the boiler room. We can suppose that these ways date from the time when Franz Hopper used to teach at Kadic. We mustn't forget theat there is also a secret way since the Ermitage, the one that Hopper and Aelita took to run away from the Ermitage.
The sewers lead to the Factory, directly on the bridge.
So the sewers are a transit place for the heroes, between their life place and their battle place, just like the scanners permit to pass from the real world to the virtual world. We frequently see it in the season 1, then, it will be erased afterwards. Yumi, Odd and Ulrich pass there in transit with skateboards, never missing an occasion to do some tricks, while Jeremy and Aelita ride micro-scooters.
There are two scenarios sometimes happening around the sewers in the episodes.
The first is that XANA is blocking the access. In the episode 11 «Plagued», it fills it with rats, in the episode 86 «Canine Conundrum», the mechanical dogs patrol there and in the episode 12 «Swarming Attack», hornets are blocking the exit.
The second scenario simply consists in the extension of an attack to inside the sewers. It happens in particular in the episode 55 «Tidal Wave» when the food colossus tracks Ulrich down there. In other cases, it is about chase, if a xanafied person (as Yolande in the episode 47 «Tip-Top Shape») uses this way to reach the Factory.
Sometimes, more eccentric events happen. In the episode 59 «The Secret», William chases Odd and Ulrich h saw using the manhole. In the episode 29 «Exploration», the Principal, Jim, Sissi, and Yumi's parents are guided by Kiwi to the Factory.
Except the Lyoko-war, the sewers don't have a great importance. We will mainly pity Ulrich who has fallen there in the episode 55.
II-The City
Spoiler
All the real places described elsewhere are, of course, included in this city ! By the way it isn't such in a strictly speaking, a big city that are located the factory and Kadic Academy ! It is in parisian outskirts. In the animated series, it is proven three times :
-In the episode 9, where the military satellite which lays into Yumi locks its shot to Paris.
-In the episode 75 «Hot Shower», where the comet swoops down to Paris.
-In the episode 84 «Guided Missile», Jeremy's fighter is located at the coordoninates 47° 43′ 13″ N, 01° 34′ 45″ E and heads to the North northeast ; cape 42, which matches to the position of a nuclear plant in the Loir-et-Cher (at Saint-Laurent, at 150km away from Paris). The cape 42 leads him to Boulogne-Billancourt (at 8km away from Paris).
According to hypotheses, the city of the heroes would be either Boulogne-Billancourt, city of the factory, or Sceaux, city of the Lakanal Academy, recognized model of Kadic.
These two cities are separated by few kilometers. Less complications in the Animated Series : Both are in the same city in the parisian outskirts !
Remark that the episode 84 «Guided Missile» gives us a superb aerial view, identical in all respects to the Bastille Square.
There isn't much to say about this city, except that it seems a peaceful place to live ; the buildings fade for the benefit of the little residential houses. It is especially the case for the district around Kadic. There seems to be less residential zones like the petrochemical factory's zone from the episode 4 «Log Book» or even the thermal power station from the episode 2 «Seeing is Believing».
It is also such an important space for Kadic's students because when they can go out, they go in town to do activities of young people (shopping, cinema, fast-food…).
Sometimes in the season 1, XANA's attacks which were born in the academy expend themselves in the city, like the attack of hornets on the episode 12 «Swarming Attack». It is no longer the case in the other seasons (except for the episodes 45 «Cold War» and 63 «Triple Trouble»).
Some attacks, them, completely cross the city without hitting it. We will name the 4 XANA's attacks where the vehicles are important : The possessed ambulance in the episode 38 «Temptation», the xanafied school bus of the episode 4 «Log Book», the hijacked military plane of the episode 84 «Guided Missile» and finally the car droven by a polymorphic clone, on the heels of Aelita in the episode 72 «Crash Course».
The city shelters places where shows are held, like the concert of the Subdigitals (Episode 89 «Music To Soothe the Savage Beast», but the city isn't big enough to shake off Sissi (Episode 81 «A Lack of Goodwill»).
III-The Forest
Spoiler
This forest is a sort of forest with broad-leeved trees which has been preserved in the middle of the suburbs ! It's a perfect forest from a chilrdren's tale but happily, we don't meet wolves, except if XANA wants to (Episode 44 «Vertigo») ! We can notice some similarities between this forest and the one where Mister Puck runs away from wolves in Aelita's nightmares. Maybe that Aelita had the habit to play there before this day that ghanged her life !
The forest extends not far from the Academy and is quite vast ; yet it is well-known for most students of Kadic, well enough for they can find a way thanks to places like the Crossroad of the Red Cross. The students don't often go there because they don't have the rights to, yet some of them like Ulrich go there when they have to sulk or to be a little bit alone !
In the episode 27 «New Order», the students have to go to the forest to make sketches of plants, which marks the first appearance of this place (and William's first appearance by the way). We see it again in the episode 54 «Lyoko Minus One» because Mrs Hertz leads the students to the forest in order to observe the impact of the pollution on the forest !
For the heroes, it is a little bit special place because it leads to the Ermitage. It is also there that Aelita has her first visions ! For XANA, it is the occasion to find some inspiration for some attacks like the takeover of roots (Episode 61 «Sabotage»), the envoy of xanafied wolves, as for the poor Yumi, she found herself chased by her whole class of xanafied students. We must recognize that as discrete place to get rid of someone, we rarely find better. Odd will bear the brunt of it in the episode 51 «Revelation» in which it is not a mysterious admirer but a polymorphic clone which traps him !
At the occasion of the last attack (Episode 74 «I'd Rather Not Talk About It»), we clearly discover the forest. XANA takes the control of a boar. The heroes, them, came for training with Jim in the forest and we realize that some spaces of the place are fit out to do some sport. It certainly is a fitness trail like the ones we find in some forests.
IV-The Swimming Pool
Spoiler
Kadic doesn't have a swimming pool within its walls, that's why in some occasions, the students have to go to the nearest public pool !
Some times for sport classes as swimming (Episode 46 «Deja Vu», or the synchronized swimming (Episode 59 «The Secret»), some times for a pesonnal entertainement (Episode 36 «Marabounta».
XANA only did one attack : the attack of the pool. We ignore what really happened there, we simply think that Ulrich and Yumi found their way around a position, either embarassing, or a position which highlights, despite them, their feelings. Odd related this event in the episode 72 «Crash Course».
Nevertheless, the swimming pool is far from being a peaceful place for all that. When William goes there with Yumi, Ulrich feels irresistible need to interfere and to play the spy, then play the braggart in order to impress his mistress ! However, when he falls in the bottom of the pool and that William saves him and Jim does mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, it generates much hubbubs in the band (Episode 36 «Marabounta»). We won't change our jealous guy.
About possessiveness, it's also at the pool, while accompanying his girlfriend Bringa, that Odd realizes that she more cares for her arrogance and her result on crowd that for her boyfriend. So he ditches her, going back to his friends he (in a cowardly way) abandoned.
V-The Hospital
Spoiler
The Lyoko-war, it does some devastation !
It's very sad, but it happens that the heroes don't end at the sick room, but at the hospital of the city ! There, we always find a team of doctors on a war footing. Yet, despite the progress of science , they don't have the required competences to make explicit the aches whose suffers a person targeted by XANA. We can name Odd, suffering from fall of heart rate because of the killer music from the episode 18 of the same name, but also Aelita whose the heart stops to beat at each deactivation of the Supercomputer (Episode 37 «Common Interest») !
Sometimes, the courageous team of doctors is more a trouble than something else : When they want to hold back their patients in the hospital. If the heroes have a capital need to lead, for example, the Hopperified Sissi (Episode 50 «Contact») or Odd and ulrich (competely mad in the episode «Temporary Insanity») to the Factory, the heroes have to improvise a repatriation in face of the doctors !
VI-At Ishiyama's Home
Spoiler
Ishiyamas' house is in a good residential area in the suburbs where Kadic is located ! It is not far from the Academy, neither from the Factory ! Indeed, when there's urgence, Yumi always achieves to reach the factory quickly enough (except when she crosses the road of a teenager with black hair and desirous for a kiss)… Yumi lives a few blocks away from Kadic, she surely needs one minute or two to reach the establishment at a run ! We mainly remark it in the episodes 1 & 39 «Teddygozilla» and «A Bad Turn», when Ulrich goes to Yumi's at top speed !
Our young japanese girl has the chance not to live in a flat but in a pleasant little house. In the episode 34 «Missing Link», we see that the small house has a little field around it and a little terrace. It isn't stuck to other buildings.
Do we enter ? Youkoso zainichi Nihon ! (Welcome in Japan !)
If the house is very french, its inside style is indubitably japanese !
Distributed on three floors, the rooms of the house all have the japanese decoration. The furniture reflects much this liking : wooden pieces of furniture, coffee tables, low beds etc. On the ground, no tiles, just fitted carpet or a floor made of wood ! On the walls, the best comes : Small calligraphies or paintings showing sino-japanese landscapes in the parents' bedroom ; everything's there !
With the decoration mix the customs ! Odd, accidently sent into Yumi's body, makes us discover in the episode 42 «A Fine Mess» that we eat in japanese way at Ishiyamas'. During other scenes of Yumi's everyday life, others rooms join the puzzle ! The Ishiyamas don't play on high tables like us but on the ground, on the knees. Obviously, the Monopoly is erased for the benefit of the Go game.
The large bathtub of the bathroom reminds the «Rotenburo» (hot springs) of which the Japanese people adore !
Like in all families, Yumi's house is the one which is the most revealed. Only Hiroki's bedroom is unknown for us ! In Yumi's one, others components of the japanese house find their place like the big plush from the universe of «My Neighbour Totoro» (An animated movie from Hayao Miyazaki) !
Yumi's house doesn't show a capital interest, although much scenes happen there as episodes go along !
By many times the action went to Yumi's landing :
-Episode 1 «Teddygozilla» : XANA sends a giant teddy bear at Yumi's.
-Episode 39 «A Bad Turn» : Ulrich is going to delcare himself but thinks seeing William kissing Yumi. Later, XANA sends a Krab at Yumi's.
-Episode 52 «The Key» : Ulrich is going to declare himself to Yumi but is interrupted by a phonecall from Jeremy.
-Episode 87 «A Space Oddity» : Odd entrusted Kiwi to Hiroki, for the time that the inspections are over at Kadic.
If it is the house of one of the hero we discover the most, it is because Yumi is the only one who is not a boarder ! Our japanese girl comes back to home each evening and the fans are surprised to be able to follow Yumi's daily life from her home. They will end in tabloids, our heroes !
So we regularly assist to familial scenes at Yumi's home. Indeed, they don't show a capital interest, most of the time it is comic scenes about ludicrous relations between Mr and Mrs Ishiyama (Or Mr Ishiyama who plays with Kiwi although he is supposed to hate dogs) !
Yet, there are times when being in live at Ishiyamas' is important, either because Yumi is stuck at her home and stays in contact with the heroes by phone, or because XANA's attack targets Yumi and she is at home (See downwards)…
As Yumi's morale goes hand in hand with the balance of her familial life, we have to dive in the middle of Ishiyamas' lifestyle to understand some things, as the parental quarrel of the episode 15 «Laughing Fit».
We can of course appreciate to follow the psychological evolution of the young Ishiyama as far as her home ! What can be more moving that seeing Yumi drop a tear for Ulrich's disappearance ? (Episode 62 «Nobody in Particular»). T-T
