Et voilà, traduction de la page CLE d'Ulrich !
Characteristics
Spoiler
« Stern ! Karate training in an hour ! I remind you there’s a competition this afternoon… in case you have forgotten. And don’t be late ! The whole team is counting on you.”
#10 The warrior awakens
Ulrich is an eleventh grade student at Kadic High School. Very tall for his age, his height and his build contrast a lot with his weakling roommate and adventure companion Odd Della Robbia.
Especially good at martial arts and sport, Ulrich is very versatile. You can see him do judo (Episode 01 “XANA 2.0”) as well as karate in competitions between High Schools (Episode 10 “The warrior awakens”) as well as the fighter’s meditation. When it’s necessary to release some steam, a punching-ball is always a good alternative.
His German sounding name isn’t pronounced [stern] but [shtern]. Mr. Delmas makes this pronunciation mistake during episode 6 “Suspicions”.
Character and behavior
Spoiler
“What are they doing ?”
“They’re just trying to prove who have the biggest sword!”
Episode 5 “Rivalry”
Ulrich’s behavior is as chaotic as the Cortex. He’s a young rather likeable and often smiling person, much less sullen than he was in the past. He sniggers and laughs freely at Jim’s or Odd’s jokes and takes pleasure in laughing at the latter if he defeats him after a game of chance (Episode 23 “Jeremie’s blues”).
On the other hand, he is extremely irascible and can easily go off. His mood swings are due to the fact that he is, more or less secretly, in love with Yumi… But he is completely unable to deal with that, as he confesses to Odd in Episode 01 “XANA 2.0”. He is unable to declare his love to her and hides behind the old premise “friends and that’s all” that Yumi forced upon him in the past. When things aren’t going the way he wants with the young Japanese girl, he becomes aggressive, isolates himself directly and quickly regrets it most of the time (Episode 6 Suspicions).
Yumi has much less difficulty in expressing her feelings. So when Ulrich learn through a poem from the Japanese girl that she regrets her selfishness (Episode 14 “Intrusion”), the fight is immediate. However, while Ulrich avoids the discussion by refusing to go on a mission to Lyoko, Yumi forces him to talk. Ulrich admits his mistakes (in this case : the fact that he stood her up) and both teenagers leave each other on a more positive note, as we learn from Yumi in Episode 26 “Ultimate mission”.
However, Ulrich has great qualities. He is particularly audacious especially when it comes to protecting Yumi when she’s in danger. He doesn’t hesitate to charge in guns a blazing to help her (Episode 4 “Miss Einstein”), and even to take big risks for her. He volunteers to be a test subject during Jeremie’s experience in Episode 09 “How to fool XANA”) so that his battle partner doesn’t have to. Likewise in Episode 17 “A professional Career Guaranteed” he accepts to transport an extremely dangerous emitter from the 5th territory up to the Cortex, going through the network. For Ulrich, Yumi comes before everything else.
As for the rest of the group, Ulrich bears a grudge against William. The latter is also still in love with the Japanese girl. Even if he had been turned down by Yumi, Ulrich still see him as a potential opponent… and William is much better at expressing his feelings. Ulrich strongly protests against him joining in the team again. He reacts very violently when his friends decide to call upon William (Episode 05 “Rivalry”). He finally accepts his return and, in spite of a couple of squabbles concerning Lyoko (Episode 06 “Suspicions”), the two rivals collaborate rather well, especially when it concerns to rescuing Yumi when she is being tracked by a specter (Episode 25 “Massacre”).
Except for his quarrels with William, Ulrich doesn’t like squabbles and is rather someone who tries to ease tensions, particularly those between Aelita and Laura that made him feel really uncomfortable (Episode 04 “Miss Einstein”).
He shares a very long history with Odd, his eternal roommate. They are at the same time very close, and like to compete about everything all the time. Odd’s everlasting presence in Ulrich’s life is sometimes very tiring for the karateka. He thus likes taking a “break” from time to time so as to be able to enjoy the silence (Episode 11 « Rendezvous »). However, most of the time, Ulrich appreciates Odd’s crazed behavior. We can see him smile when his friend comes in late at meetings presenting hollow excuses. (Episode 02 “Cortex”).
He likes to make fun of his partner even about serious things like the complete loss of his codes. (Episode 25).
Another noteworthy fact is that Ulrich also has a weird kind of relationship with Jim, in whom he sees a kind of mentor. It’s by applying the sport teacher’s advice that the young man win his karate competition and find a way to destroy the ninjas in Episode 10 “The Warrior awakens”.
In general, Ulrich isn’t good with intellectual things. This explains a less important relationship with Jeremy and Aelita. In the great decisions that have been taken which have kept the new conflict with XANA apace, Ulrich has stayed a bit behind, merely following the lead and executing the orders.
He is stymied by phenomenon that he doesn’t understand like the temporal loop in Episode 24 “Temporal paradox”.
On Lyoko, Ulrich is fearsome. His temper pushes him much more towards a direct assault strategy. However, his lack of attention or thought does that he often gets easily tricked. He is very quickly mentally overwhelmed when he arrives in the middle of the fight between Odd and his doppelganger (Episode 21 “False Pretenses”).
About the virtual world
Spoiler
“You really don’t have much luck. Today I’m in a very bad mood!”
Episode 14 “Intrusion”
On the virtual world, Ulrich is in his comfort zone: the fighting one. He disposes of a very deadly potential with his two swords that he wields very dangerously. He is also able to combine sword attacks and physical assaults.
However Ulrich had an extremely weak startup at the beginning of the conflict with XANA. Very quick overwhelmed in Episode 3 “Spectromania”, he performs poorly in his task of defending the Megapod against the Krabs in Episode 4 “Miss Einstein”, he almost falls into the digital sea in Episode 05 “Rivalry”, falls to the Cortex’s defenses in Episode 06 “Suspicions”, is impotent against the Blok’s wall of Episode 07 “Countdown”, and to wrap it all up, he literally gets crushed by the Ninjas in the Episode 8 “Virus”.
Thankfully, he gets a grip on himself after that. Ulrich is the member of the group who has the greatest disadvantage against XANA’s monsters, because he’s the only one that doesn’t have any ranged attacks. He also remains on the ground. Against all odds, the virtual samurai doesn’t disappoint. He even wins against the flying mantas in the 5th Territory (Episode 13 “Friday the 13th”).
Ulrich is a close quarter’s fighter. Because of that, he is the one who deals with the Ninjas the best. After the surprise effect of Episode 08 “Virus”, he comes out victorious from his two confrontations against them: in Episode 14 “Intrusion”, when he kicks the 5th territory’s Ninja ass. This creature had beaten Aelita, Odd and William one after another with relative ease.
He also wins a decisive duel in Episode 16 “Confusion” in the central room of the Cortex.
Ulrich’s weapons are very appropriate to fight against the Ninjas. However he can also rely upon his two powers. The first is the Supersprint. It makes him able to run very fast, leaving only a blue trace behind him. It is ideal to catch his opponents unawares or come quickly to the Towers.
The second is Triplikata. Ulrich makes two clones appear which are used to fool his adversary while he waits for an opportunity to surprise him.
Ulrich is one of the best warriors on the virtual world. Nevertheless, he remains bested by William who has stronger powers and is more regular in his fights, as can be seen in Episode 05 “Rivalry”.
Finally, with the vehicles, Ulrich is rather versatile. He has complete mastery of his overbike as well as the navskids or the Skidbladnir. He is also handy with the Megapod but isn’t as good as Odd in this area.
Story
Spoiler
“Yes Jeremy, it’s a specter. He does something strange with his eyes where you get confused when you look at him. I wasn’t able to touch him. He’s suspicious. I think he knows about the codes.”
“You absolutely have to try feeding him your fake codes!”
Episode 9 “How to fool XANA”
After XANA’s defeat, while Ulrich leads a new life in which his main concern is to find a way to declare his feelings to Yumi, while William wasn’t perpetually sticking close to him, our young athlete was far from the troubles that came with leading the Lyoko-warrior double life.
He wasn’t happy then, when he discovered that their archenemy was back.
Ulrich was his first victim since the first specter, Jim’s one, attacked him first, leaving him in a poor state (Episode 01 “XANA 2.0”). Cyber fighting was back on the menu.
Jeremy explained to Ulrich, Odd, Aelita and Yumi that XANA had survived by injecting his root codes in them. XANA’s Specters, by catching the heroes, absorbed these codes and took them back to XANA, which gave it back its power. So the Lyoko-fighters lived for weeks with the fear of seeing a specter come to their school to attack them. From a little secondary-school pupil to a replica of himself through a replica of William (Episode 05 Rivalry), Ulrich has been faced to a succession of formidable specters. XANA’s creatures are particularly focus on Ulrich.
Against all the dangers, Ulrich doesn’t step back. He is prepared to fight specters, even if this involved charging head first (Episode 06 “Suspicions”) or to be a test subject for fake codes experiences to destroy specters (Episode 09 “How to fool XANA”).
On Lyoko, through XANA’s root codes, Ulrich and his friends are able to deactivate themselves the towers. So Ulrich wasn’t only a fighter but a key element in the conflict.
The virtual experience intensifies. By searching XANA’s mark, Jeremy finally found its refuge : a new virtual world, the Cortex, created by a supercomputer which belongs to Tyron, an ex-colleague of Franz Hopper, Aelita’s father (Episode 02 “Cortex”). This new world reveals a lot of dangers. The biggest one are the ninjas : armed humanoids sent on the cortex by Tyron and very fight-skilled (Episode 08 “Virus”). Ulrich must face them and XANA’s monster, both to deactivate towers generating specters or to investigate on Cortex’s interface.
Missions increase, always different. Sometimes, William must be rescued (Episode 22 “Mutiny”), sometimes an emitter put on Lyoko by a Tyron’s ninja on Lyoko must been destroy (Episode 17 “A professional Career Guaranteed”).
One thing is certain : dangers are always omnipresent… From imprisonment in a temporal loop (Episode 24 “Temporal paradox”) to destructive specter in error virtualized (Episode 19 “The trap”) through the destruction of the Skid (Episode 23 Jeremie’s blues”) or a confrontation with replicas of Lyoko-fighters (Episode 21 “False pretenses”).
On a personal level, things aren’t easy for Ulrich. He must compromise with William, freshly reinstate in the team (Episode 05 “Rivalry”). He must deals with his always eventful relation with Yumi too. However, every way, things are going better…
… except for root codes. After a lot of specters which touch Ulrich, the young man lost his last codes during the devastating attack from Episode 25 “Massacre”.
Fortunately, the virus created by Jeremy to destroy the Cortex, his Supercomputer and XANA, is ready to work. The heroes launch into their ultimate mission. They insert the virus in the supercomputer but Tyron turn off the machine. XANA is thus asleep with the Supercomputer. If Tyron turn it on, the virus will become active and will destroy everything.
The fight against XANA is thus finished again. But Ulrich and his friends must watch out whereas they turn off again their Supercomputer. Tyron could come again, because he keep Aelita’s mother. Worse, he could be able to find a antivirus software and turn on again his machine… as well as XANA… (Episode 26 “Ultimate mission).
